Cancelled : Monday Night Ride

Normally we'd ride through a snowstorm, against the wind and uphill in both directions, but Environment Canada is calling for thunderstorms tonight. As such, we're calling off the group ride. Tonight might be a good night to revisit your trainer! Or maybe take up swimming...

See you May 27th in Nanoose.

MIVA 20k - May 9, 2013

Tonight the temperature and winds were just perfect for the first 20k of the 2013 season.  Another great turnout of 16 riders  came out for the time trial, along with many volunteers.  The course had some punishing climbs, many found it much harder than the regular MIVA 20k TT course.  That said, the hills make you stronger...especially if you're always on a fixie like Patrick Burnham. MIVA 20k TT

Don Gilmore came in with the fastest overall time with a 28:28, averaging 43km/hr to win the Men's category.  Reagan Lovig made his TT debut tonight and pulled in a very impressive 2nd place finish.  Michael Gill came out for his 3rd straight TT and improved his speeds even over the longer and hillier course. Rhona Lettau came out for her first TT of the year and won the womens race a great time of 36:44, just edging out Rose Houle, Sarah Davidson, and Jennifer Gordon.  In the youth female category, Abigail Hare won her 2nd race with another great race.  Finally in the youth male category, Aiden Hare did an outstanding race (averaging 25.5 over the hills).  Both Aiden and Ian Gilmore actually went much faster over the longer 20k course compared to last weeks 15k course, great efforts!

The turnouts this season have been great, with many riders coming out for 3 out of 3 races so far: Angellos Glaros, Michael Gill, Patrick Burnham, Corey Friesen, Mark Weiler, Don Gilmore, Ian Gilmore, Jason Hare, Abigail Hare, Aiden Hare, and Paul Callow.  It's nice to see so many regulars, as well as many new faces each week.

The winner of the MIVA socks for last week was Michael Gill, with Rose Houle's name being drawn this week for wearing MIVA kit and winning a free pair of cycling socks.

The results can all be seen here, sortable by category, and also click the drop down arrow to view 'time back' or 'average speed'.

As always, many thanks to the volunteers who came out tonight.  Kirby Villeneuve, Angellos Glaros, and Randy Smith were out at the 10k turn around.  Glen Gordon thanks for being the holder at the start line, Phil (and gf) for helping with the iPad timing.  As always Peter for setting up the course, manual timing, and course take down.

Next week is a 40k TT, hope to see many people out.  The idea behind a spring 40k TT is that you can compare it to the late August final 40k TT and see your improvement.  And wear MIVA gear to win stuff!  See you then.

MIVA TUESDAY CRITERIUM 130507

Miva Tuesday Criterium 130507

Arbutus Meadows Equestrian Centre, Nanaoose

Organised by Mid Island Velo Association

30 laps points criterium with sprints every 5 laps.

Top three get 5, 3, 2 points. Double on 15th. And final lap.

All youth, women and senior riders competed in the same event tonight as there were only thirteen participants. The pack immediately spread out but reformed by lap four, ready for the first of six primes. As they came round towards the finish, a trio comprising Menno Jongsma, Paul Thompson and junior, Andrew Grant had a slight lead and they took the initial points in that order.

Menno continued out front, forcing the pace but then Paul, Ron Hewitson, James Grant (J) and Nick Kupiak controlled the front of the pack, with the remainder still close behind. As they rounded the sharp turn after the finish line and surged up the hill, cadet woman Jessica Reynolds lost contact but rode on solo, only losing a few metres per lap.

The second prime points on lap ten went to Jongsma who again had edged away from the bunch. Paul Thompson and James Grant took the rest of the points and then things settled down for the next couple of laps. By this time, Charlene Hay and Mike Gill had been lapped but, to their credit, they kept on gamely and eventually finished the race.

The fast-moving pack continued on until the mid race prime which had double points up for grabs. Menno again gapped the field taking Paul and James with him. All three garnered the double points and then eased back to the pack until prime number four which again was won by Menno with James Grant and brother Mark earning the rest of the points.

With nine laps left, Jessica was finally lapped but managed to hang on to the bunch for a couple more laps before dropping off the back, very tired. The bunch eased off a little for the next four laps but with five to go the pace picked up again and Menno took the penultimate prime. Charlene Hay was being lapped again at this point and crossed the line in second place, getting three points but not altering her position as she was not on the same lap as any of the other points winners. Third in this fifth prime was Vipyrs cadet .Brodie Hay.

With five laps to go until the final sprint, Menno time trialled off the front and opened up a sizable gap on the field. The rest of the bunch kept together attempting to organise a chase but still dropped back. Just a couple of hundred metres before the last lap Brodie Hay touched Evan Earp Jones' wheel and came down heavily. Evan and Ron Hewitson stopped to check that he was OK and reported a case of road rash but nothing broken.

At the line, it was Menno Jongsma adding to his total with yet another ten points for a perfect score of forty. James Grant was second with six points and Paul Thompson third with four points. The points winners were placed in order with the rest of the riders placed according to their finishing postion on the final lap. Any lapped riders were placed according to the number of times they were lapped and any riders not crossing the finish line were recorded as DNF.

The Vipyrs showed tonight that they were well able to stay with a senior pack and even to challenge them. The Grant brothers were third and fourth – quite an achievement with at least two second category riders in the race tonight.

Thanks to Hillary Grant for bell and lap board operation, to Iain Hay for course set-up and to Patrick Burnham for offering first aid service.

MIVA 15k TT - May 2, 2013

MIVA debuted a brand new course tonight, heading west from South Forks Road.  There were mixed reviews about the course but overall it was great with very little traffic.  The course climbed on the way out and into a headwind, then on the way back the racers were able to ride a tailwind to the finish.

15k Elevation Profile

15 riders came out tonight, another excellent turnout.  Of the 15 riders, 4 youths took on the course and all did great especially on the hill (see the climb at km 4.5).

The results for tonight's TT can be seen here.  Congrats to everyone for coming out and giving a huge effort!

Many thanks to the volunteers who came out tonight to help out!  Thank you Sarah Davidson and familiy, Katy Wallington, Phil Birrer, Ian Smith, and as always, Peter McCaffery.

Hope to see you all (and others) next week same place same time.

ON-LINE ORDERING OF MIVA CLOTHING

This year, the MIVA executive has set up an on-line ordering system for club clothing. MIVA's new supplier, VOMax produces a high quality product at a great price and has sizing that is more in line with North American needs.  Unfortunately, very few of the club members have taken advantage of the ability to order and pay for kit on-line. This means that the club is once again in the position of ordering a large quantity to supply future needs. This ties up a significant portion of the club's cash and limits the other member benefits we would like to provide. We will try and arrange a later deadline for ordering and hope that club members will take advantage of the new system.
