NEW RECORD FOR DUOMONT /WIEGLES HILL CLIMB 11/09/15

MIVA 5.1 KM HILL CLIMB Duomont Road /Wiegles Road, Nanaimo

September 15th., 2011

Just like last year, tonight's hill climb was almost called off due to heavy rain but the skies cleared just an hour before the scheduled start and seven hardy souls turned up to contest MIVA's longest hill climb. In the men's event, first off was master e Dave Kenny just failed to beat his time from last year because he forgot to borrow the organiser's Dura Ace Wheels. Next off was Corey Friesen who attempted the Duomont climb for the first time and finished thirty seconds down on Kenny. Then came our Comox visitor, Doug Merrick, who is studying in Nanaimo for the winter. Despite not having competed in any of MIVA's previous climbs, he still managed a very creditable sub 14' 30” ride. Next was Bryan Rehill, who has been steadily improving all season and just missed Stefan Jacobsen's record by eleven seconds. Last off was Paul Auton who was coming into sight as Rehill finished and was obviously on a record ride. As he crossed the line, the watch indicated 12' 20”, so he beat the previous record by a scant seven seconds.

In the women's event Janna Gillick almost beat fifteen minutes for the climb, beating Cheryl Morch by just over half a minute and repeating her last year's win.

Now that the regular time trial series is complete, there is only the hill climb championship on October 8th but participants in this can still score points to up their year's totals. The first place in all categories is already sewn up but in both the men's competition, there's just two points separating Paul Auton and Corey Friesen and in the women's contest there are only four points between Cheryl Morch and Colleen Wtorek!

PACIFIC SPORT COACHES WEEK

Pacific Sport's annual coaches week is fast approaching. In addtion to the many good workshops, they are hosting Rowing Canada coach Mike Spracklen for breakfast on Friday Sept. 23rd at the Coast Bastion Inn in Nanaimo. Mike will be speaking on his perspective of 'Excellence' and extracting the best of those around you. Here is a quote from one of his former athlete's blog;

"Mike brought the idea of excellence, but never demanded it. Rather, he created an environment that made you demand it of yourself. Mike is an excellent rowing teacher, coach and leader but it is his focus and ability to do what he says he is going to do that sets him apart. Being the example of what he expects of his athletes allows him to create an environment where those athletes begin to demand those same qualities of themselves."

Mike's presentation is suitable for coaches, business managers and supervisors, parents and anyone else looking for an insight in getting results. This will be a special motivational moment that's not to be missed! Sign up here to reserve a seat for Mike's presentation and see what other events Pacific Sport is hosting that week.
