CYCLO-CROSS IS HERE

Several of MIVA's members are going to ride the Cross on the Rock series this Fall. Interest has already been expressed in weekly clinics in Nanaimo to develop and hone CX skills. We are looking at possible venues and days/times. Please contact pakamac@gmail.com with your ideas.

MIVA FACEBOOK PAGE

MIVA has now been on Facebook for about three months. Doug Merrick originally set up the page, hoping that it would be a great way for members and other to communicate about club rides and other MIVA activities. From the weekly report, it is evident that very few visit the site (or perhaps, even know about it) . You can find it by typing in Mid Island Velo and then save the page to your favourites.

ONE MORE MIVA SERIES EVENT TO GO

With only the Nanaimo hill climb championship still left in MIVA's first annual time trial series, Don Gillmore has the men's trophy sewn up and Janna Gillick is a clear winner in the women's category. However, in the women's contest for second and third, only two points separate

Cheryl Morch and Colleen Wtoreck. In the men's division, Warren Muir has a chance to tie for second if he rides and

Paul Auton doesn't. Again, depending on who shows for the hill climb and who doesn't, Corey Friesen, Ian Smith, Bryan Rehill, Kyle Waring and Shawn Boyd all have a chance of taking third place.

NEW RECORD FOR DUOMONT /WIEGLES HILL CLIMB 11/09/15

MIVA 5.1 KM HILL CLIMB Duomont Road /Wiegles Road, Nanaimo

September 15th., 2011

Just like last year, tonight's hill climb was almost called off due to heavy rain but the skies cleared just an hour before the scheduled start and seven hardy souls turned up to contest MIVA's longest hill climb. In the men's event, first off was master e Dave Kenny just failed to beat his time from last year because he forgot to borrow the organiser's Dura Ace Wheels. Next off was Corey Friesen who attempted the Duomont climb for the first time and finished thirty seconds down on Kenny. Then came our Comox visitor, Doug Merrick, who is studying in Nanaimo for the winter. Despite not having competed in any of MIVA's previous climbs, he still managed a very creditable sub 14' 30” ride. Next was Bryan Rehill, who has been steadily improving all season and just missed Stefan Jacobsen's record by eleven seconds. Last off was Paul Auton who was coming into sight as Rehill finished and was obviously on a record ride. As he crossed the line, the watch indicated 12' 20”, so he beat the previous record by a scant seven seconds.

In the women's event Janna Gillick almost beat fifteen minutes for the climb, beating Cheryl Morch by just over half a minute and repeating her last year's win.

Now that the regular time trial series is complete, there is only the hill climb championship on October 8th but participants in this can still score points to up their year's totals. The first place in all categories is already sewn up but in both the men's competition, there's just two points separating Paul Auton and Corey Friesen and in the women's contest there are only four points between Cheryl Morch and Colleen Wtorek!
