MIVA 40/20k TT : June 6, 2013

IMG_0966 Another near perfect evening for a TT, a few drops of rain but not a bit of wind made it ideal out there.  A 1-2m swath of gravel at about the 5k point definitely caused some to slow to be careful to get past, and unfortunately it took Don Gilmore out of the race with a flat tire after 20k at the halfway point.

A fast group of 6 cyclists from the Russ Hays Cycling Team made a huge effort and came up from Victoria.  Unfortunately a fork issue kept Emile de Rosnay from making another appearance on the TT course, but the rest fared well and took the top 5 places overall in the 40k.  David Strasser was the only one to come close to a negative split, being only 2 seconds slower on the second lap.  Curtis Dearden laid down what is just a smoking TT with a 53:15, which set this course record by 5 minutes!  Luke Koolman came in 2nd with a 57:57,  followed by David Strasser (59:25), Steve Grandy (1:00:37), and Hayley Warkentin (1:06:49).  With 3 more 40k TT's later in the season it would be great to have this group up on the original course to see if any of Don Gilmore's long standing records might fall.

In the womens race, Hayley Warkentin took top honours, followed by the TT Series leader Rose Houle, and Sarah Davidson.  Sarah put in a HUGE effort out there tonight, cutting a full TWO MINUTES 20 SECONDS off of her previous time.

The highest placing MIVA member went to Gareth Slocombe, who's obviously been putting in the hard miles this year as he rode a 1:08:58.  Right behind him was the ever improving Mike Gill who had his highest placing yet.  Paul Callow gets serious kudos for knocking off 3 MINUTES and 36 seconds from his last 40k!

In the youth race Abigail Hare got a season best time in the 20k with a 44:31.  Aiden Hare also rode a season best time with a 46:25.  Ian Gilmore rode his 2nd fastest 20k of the year, always finishing with a huge smile on his face too.  These 3 dedicated youths are only getting faster and faster!

Many volunteers out again to thank, Glen Gordon for doing a bit of everything (from holder to yeller to support car), Katy Condon for helping organize the timing with myself and Peter, and Mike Mann for being the lonely man at the turnaround point directing people back.

Next week we shift back to a 15k distance, short and sweet so let's get tons of people out to hammer away.  With the Victoria Tri on the weekend this will be a nice last high tempo ride.  If you are in full on taper mode, we'd love to have you out to help!

Criterium - Arbutus 4-Jun-2013

50 laps points criterium with sprints every 5 laps.

Top three get 5, 3, 2 points. Double on 15th and final lap.

All categories started together. The top twelve riders stayed together through the first of 10 sprints, which was won by Ian Smith, from Menno Jongsma with Mark Wieler third . These twelve stayed intact through the second prime, won by Menno, with Rob Russell second and Jessica Reynolds, (lapped) third. Over the next fifteen laps, the weaker riders in the bunch were shed one by one until there were just four left: Ian, Menno, Rob and Ray, with Chris Cameron just ten seconds back in fifth.Soon afterwards, Rob Russell retired leaving thee lead trio taking time and laps out of most of the rest of the field Chris soldiered on, losing a little each lap but steadily catching the stragglers. The sixthe sprint at thirty laps was won by the classy Mr. Smith, with Ray in second and Nick Kupiak (lapped) taking third, the two points eventually giving him third place overall in front of the other riders at two laps down. Ian gave the ninth sprint to Ray and then easily left him to finish alone with over fifty points total and having completed the race in 47' 41” with Ray seventeen seconds down and Chris Cameron taking third a lap down.

There were nineteen riders out tonight to enjoy one of the best evenings this year.
