SIXTH ANNUAL NANAIMO HILL CLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP 131005

The weather was cool but clear on Saturday morning for the MIVA hill climb Championship. the sixth annual one to date. The first two were organised by Oak Bay Bikes CC, the predecessor to Mid Island Velo Association but the format has been the same throughout. Riders set off at intervals and the event is run as a road time trial. There were only eight starts, with Cheryl Morch and Sean De Pol being given an early start due to other priorities. Most of the remaining participants have supported the entire series this year, with the Hare trio of Dad, Jason, Abigail and Aiden being among the first to turn up. Other riders were Mark Wieler, Jim Brown and series leader Justin Mark. The two youth competitors were first off, followed by Jason , Jim , Mark and Justin. Start intervals were at 30 seconds to enable timekeeper Peter McCaffery to get to the finish before any of the cyclists. The club's Webscorer programme made this a simple task. As expected, Justin came into view first and then the remainder in reverse order (great seeding Mr. McC.!). Justin won the event with a time just 44 seconds off Paul Autons 12'00" record, set in 2011. Other notable performance was by Abigail Hare who established a female youth recoord.. For full results go to our Results page. Thanks to Ross Palfrey, Cheryl and Sean for helping to set up registration and toss agin for recording the event. Watch for his photos etc.

Here are the top results since 2009. If anyone has more information on the missing riders and times from the firast two years, please email to info@bikeracing.ca.

MIVA KILPATRICK HILL CLIMB 130926

The fourth event in the MIVA climb series series was held on the 3.2 kilometre Kilpatrick/Benson View roads, finishing opposite Witchcraft Lake. Like the Aho Road race, it was a massed event withal with all participants starting together. After a kilometre, six of the ten starters were still together but soon afterwards, Mike Gill dropped back. after a brief attempt to regain contact, he settled into his high cadence and continued alone, between the leaders and the slower riders. The lead pack reached the sharp right hand turn onto Benson View and, as the road kicked up to twelve percent, first Phil Birrer and then Sean de Pol were dropped. Now only MIvA rider Nick Kupiak, Justin Mark, Steed Cycles and Doug Merrick, CVCC were left. First Nick and then Justin turned on the juice, leaving Doug to find his own way to the finish. As road dipped down slightly before the final two hundred metre rise, Steed and Kupiak were still together and that's the way they finished, with just 0.2seconds separating them. These two have battled each other for the first four hill climbs with Justin winning three and Nick one. The final two events will give Nick the chance to catch his Vancouver opponent. The lone woman, For Theresa Price, UBC Tri club, this was her first hill climb and also her first start in a MIVA event. She has just relocated to take a position at NRGH and weare sure to see more of her. Abigail Hare finished behind Theresa for the female youth category and brother Aiden brought up the rear for male youth. Thanks to shutterbug Patrick Burnham for taking some photos, which should be upon the web soon.
