We have some sad news to share. This Sunday July 14 Peter McCaffery passed away after a very spirited battle with cancer. Peter was the founder and president of MIVA from 2009-2014. MIVA's roots grew out of the OBB Wheelers, and the Mid Island region's rich cycling presence. For many years as president and later director, Peter McCaffery worked tirelessly to bring MIVA to where it is today. Peter's efforts have not only encouraged many people to get out and ride, but also inspired others to personal bests. All summer long, for 20 consecutive weeks Peter volunteered his time by driving out to the time trial course, setting it up, taking registration, timing everyone, posting results, and then doing it all again at the criterium a few days later. The amount of time and effort Peter selflessly put into MIVA and the cycling community is astounding. Peter enjoyed riding up and remains an inspiration to us all. Ride on Peter, ride on.
Please note that there are no road and gravel rides scheduled for this coming weekend as many of our members will be participating in the final event of the VI Gravel series: Nanaimo Unpaved Sunday June 16. If you are not riding, and/or have family or friends who are available, please consider signing up to volunteer. As a thank you we are offering MIVA Unpaved swag: hats toques or mugs to volunteers. Sign up here, or email miva.board@gmail.com for more details.
Shake off the rain and get ready for summer to start with our summer challenge this Sunday Jun 9. Find all the details here:
More rain…booo! June 2nd Sunday Social is cancelled. The weather is looking mildly more promising for next weekend so do a sun dance, so we can get back out there!
Due to the risk of rain today the gravel rides are officially cancelled. Check discord for informal plans if you are still wanting to get out. With any luck this weather will help delay forest fire season!
