  MIVA 20km Time Trial

Nanaimo River Road. 130620

It rained steadily all day throughout most of Nanaimo but up at Nanaimo River Road the course was dry, with just a few wet patches. Te3mperature around 20 degrees and no wind so a perfect night.

Five of the six starters did personal bests for the course and all were treated to a dry ride, with the rain just beginning to spot ten minutes after the last rider finished.

HCTC's Reagan Lovig was first again, with Matt Allardyce riding his first time trial this year coming in second, finishing while puffing like a traction engine. The wild life in the area probably scattered at the sound. Patrick Burnham, riding his trusty fixed wheel machine was third just eleven seconds behind Matt and Paul Callow also finished in under thirty-five minutes to take fourth place. Mike Gill knocked a heap of time off his previous best and finished in just over thirty-five minutes. Vet. Dave Metcalfe, who also rode a fixed wheel, had anticipated the probability of wet conditions and was equipped with fenders, which slowed his progress somewhat.

Corey Friesen, who has been working with Webscorer, an Apple-based sports timing programme, helped timekeeper Peter McC. to come to terms with the new software and just five minutes after the end of the race, the results were already up on Webscorer's site. Next, Peter is working on an entry form that the participants can sign right on a tablet screen. This, together with new courses that are measured with a GPS down to a couple of metres is really streamlining the entire time trial results process. BTW, Lorrie Baildham, who is on the mend from her crash at Race the Ridge, acted as turn marshal.

MIVA 20k TT : June 20, 2013

It rained off and on during the day, but again the TT had decent weather with only a few drops here and there.  The threat of rain kept some riders away this week, but 6 showed up to duke it out on the 20k course, with 2 of them being on fixies (Dave Metcalfe and Patrick Burnham).

Reagan Lovig again proved he's on fire this year, posting the win with a seasons best 32:23, with Mathew Allardyce coming through 1:38 behind, and Patrick Burnham in 3rd 10 seconds after Matthew.  Mike Gill continued his improvement, chopping over a minute off his best time.  Paul Callow was once again most improved, knocking THREE FULL MINUTES off his 20k best, very impressive.  Dave Metcalfe has been dedicated this year, in this his 5th race and a seasons best time in the 20k.  6 racers, 5 seasons best times tonight, well done!

 Results here!

Thanks to Lorrie Baildham who came out to volunteer tonight at the turnaround.

A big congrats to Curtis Dearden of Russ Hays Racing, after setting the course record at the MIVA 40k TT a few weeks ago, he won the TT at the Canadian Championships this morning!

Next week is a 20k TT, see you all there!

2013 MIVA Time Trial - Location Notice

It's obvious there's a deep divide between course preferences for the Nanaimo River Road TT, it's great that the Nanaimo cycling community is passionate about this topic.

I've spoken extensively with Public Works at the City of Nanaimo the past few days, and while the good news is S Forks Road will be paved next week (great news for cycling all around!), there is more construction on the way to Nanaimo River Road.

At about this location ( http://goo.gl/maps/oxpjh ) there is going to be construction from August 1st lasting for up to 6 weeks. This lies in the original TT course, but not within the new TT course.

The choice is obvious that the 2013 MIVA Time Trial Series will stay on the temporary course for the rest of this season. We'll be then re-visiting this topic after the season, engaging our expanding membership into what course of action should be taken.  There is a number of criteria we all have to consider between the 2 courses: safety, history, tradition, parking, and accessibility (how many now BIKE to the race rather than drive).

The 2013 season has been great already let's keep it rolling everyone!

MIVA 40/20k TT : June 6, 2013

IMG_0966 Another near perfect evening for a TT, a few drops of rain but not a bit of wind made it ideal out there.  A 1-2m swath of gravel at about the 5k point definitely caused some to slow to be careful to get past, and unfortunately it took Don Gilmore out of the race with a flat tire after 20k at the halfway point.

A fast group of 6 cyclists from the Russ Hays Cycling Team made a huge effort and came up from Victoria.  Unfortunately a fork issue kept Emile de Rosnay from making another appearance on the TT course, but the rest fared well and took the top 5 places overall in the 40k.  David Strasser was the only one to come close to a negative split, being only 2 seconds slower on the second lap.  Curtis Dearden laid down what is just a smoking TT with a 53:15, which set this course record by 5 minutes!  Luke Koolman came in 2nd with a 57:57,  followed by David Strasser (59:25), Steve Grandy (1:00:37), and Hayley Warkentin (1:06:49).  With 3 more 40k TT's later in the season it would be great to have this group up on the original course to see if any of Don Gilmore's long standing records might fall.

In the womens race, Hayley Warkentin took top honours, followed by the TT Series leader Rose Houle, and Sarah Davidson.  Sarah put in a HUGE effort out there tonight, cutting a full TWO MINUTES 20 SECONDS off of her previous time.

The highest placing MIVA member went to Gareth Slocombe, who's obviously been putting in the hard miles this year as he rode a 1:08:58.  Right behind him was the ever improving Mike Gill who had his highest placing yet.  Paul Callow gets serious kudos for knocking off 3 MINUTES and 36 seconds from his last 40k!

In the youth race Abigail Hare got a season best time in the 20k with a 44:31.  Aiden Hare also rode a season best time with a 46:25.  Ian Gilmore rode his 2nd fastest 20k of the year, always finishing with a huge smile on his face too.  These 3 dedicated youths are only getting faster and faster!

Many volunteers out again to thank, Glen Gordon for doing a bit of everything (from holder to yeller to support car), Katy Condon for helping organize the timing with myself and Peter, and Mike Mann for being the lonely man at the turnaround point directing people back.

Next week we shift back to a 15k distance, short and sweet so let's get tons of people out to hammer away.  With the Victoria Tri on the weekend this will be a nice last high tempo ride.  If you are in full on taper mode, we'd love to have you out to help!
