OBB TT Series Race #8 - 6.18.2015

The threat of rain kept a few riders away tonight, as did injuries and race tapering, but 22 still showed up to race with a bit of a nasty headwind on the way out...but no rain thankfully.  We welcomed 3 newcomers to the TT series, Kristy-Lee Mighton, David Thomas, and Peter Mogg.  Anita Gillmore and Paul Callow made their season debut as well. Even with the wind, we had yet another new COURSE RECORD, this time it was Meghan Gillmore breaking the Youth Female CR with a blistering 28:28 (her former best time was 29:10), a 42 second improvement!  The mens race was tight once again, with only 8.2 seconds separating Don Gillmore and Paul Auton.  Nick Kupiak rounded out the podium with (another) PB of 21:24.  Joel Lutz fresh off an Alcatraz/Half Ironman double header set a PB of 24:07.  Newcomer Peter Mogg put in an impressive debut on the course coming in with 21:57, good for 4th best time ever on the 15k course!  In the female race Janna Gillick stayed undefeated with a 24:21, and in the youth male Aiden Hare took the win with a 30:42 time.

The season standings shuffled a bit tonight, with Janna taking over top spot on the Female side and Paul Auton taking over first in the Male side.  The winners in all 4 categories are awarded the custom designed MIVA Trophies at the end of the season, special thanks to Angellos Glaros of Glaros Studios for creating some of the nicest trophies anywhere, and for always being a huge supporter of MIVA.

The BAR (Best All-Around Rider) award is the old OBB WHEELERS trophy (the one you can drink from), and is awarded to the top female and top male rider.  How this is determined is your top time in all 3 distances (15k, 20k, 40k) is totalled and your overall average speed is calculated.  Fastest average speed wins.  In 2014 Don Gillmore won with an average of 43.25, and Janna Gillick with a 36.95km/hr average.

BAR Leaders as of 6.18

Special thanks to the Nanaimo RCMP for patrolling Nanaimo River Road tonight, and to the City of Nanaimo for loaning out some 'Event Ahead' signs.  Thank you to Peter McCaffery for acting as holder for the start line.  Thank you to volunteers Lee and Tamara Zavarise (and kids) for acting as turnaround marshalls and cheering on everyone with cowbells.  Note that volunteers receive 5 points in the standings (to be added at the end, as Webscorer is working on a way to add them manually).

MIVA ARBUTUS ELIMINATION RACE AND POINTS CRITERIUM 150617The second visit to Arbutus Meadows this season attracted a field of just seven riders – but all of them strong. Before the criterium there was a miss and out, with last over the line each lap being eliminated. Sean De Pol (MIVA) was caught napping and was first to go, followed by Nick Kupiak (Broad St. Cycles), who was no doubt saving himself for the criterium. Then it was Justin Mark (BCBR), still tired from his epic 24 hour mountain bike race at the weekend. Cowichan Cycles' Janna Gillick was next to go, also recovering from a tough weekend in Victoria. Meanwhile, Sean Lunney (OBB) had taken off and established a commanding lead of eight seconds With just three riders remaining, Aaron Milan (MIVA) was outsprinted by CVCC's Ray Wagner who was still three hundred metres behing the Oak Bay Bikes speedster. He was unable to haul Mr. Lunney in before the final sprint and Sean took a well-deserved chequered flag. The points criterium was over forty laps, with eight sprints, double points for midway and finish. Almost immediately, Janna and Mark dropped off the pace and by the end of lap two, Nick had a five second lead on the remaining riders, which he steadily increased, finally lapping the group after fourteen laps and taking the top points in the process, plus a bonus of twenty extra. The rest of the competitors were left to sprint for second and third place points and by the halfway mark, Nick had a huge lead while Aaron was one point ahead of Ray, followed by Sean De Pol, then Sean Lunney, and Justin bringing up the rear. During this double points sprint, Sean Lunney caught the rear wheel of Aaron Milan who was also sprinting hard and fell heavily, sustaining some severe cuts to his forearm and leg. The other riders eased off and went back to check him out and it was decided to finish the race.so the results stood.

TWO COURSE RECORDS were broken tonight, as Janna Gillick clocked a 23:21 to lower her previous mark by 4 seconds!  Aiden Hare also smashed the youth male course record tonight with a  29:44, the previous record was 30:02 held by Ian Gillmore.  Abigail Hare rode her lifetime best 29:11, just 1 second shy of the youth female course record held by Meghan Gillmore.

There was a tight finish at the top of the leaderboard as both Don Gillmore and Paul Auton topped 43km/hr average, with Don taking the win by under 5 seconds.  Come out to the Time Trials, the results speak for themselves.  96% of racers tonight improved on their previous seasons best time!  Mike Gill was a micro 1.3 seconds off his seasons best too or we'd have had a clean sweep, impressive everyone.  A big congrats to Carole Phee as well, one year ago she raced a 42:20, and tonight she clocked a 30:59, over 11 minutes knocked off over just 15k is incredible Carole!

INDUSTRIAL PLASTICS AND PAINT CRITERIUM 150609

Immediately after the three neutral laps, the action started! Peter Mogg,Brodie Hay, Janna Gillick, Nick Kupiak & Jon Lam put 5 seconds into the rest of the bunch but by the next lap, just Lam and Kupiak were off the front with a chase group of seven in hot pursuit. Within another lap, Nick had distanced himself from Lam and there were now three groups plus a straggler. By lap seven, the Broad Street Cycles speedster had eight seconds in hand, with Justin Mark bridging. Two more laps and the duo were together and proceeded to gain five seconds per lap on a chase group that included the original break plus Aaron Dussault, with the rest of the starters losing ground fast. And that's the way it stayed until eighteen laps to go when Justin finally was unable to stay with Mr. Kupiak and started drifting back . Ten laps later. Nick lapped the chase group and actually went ahead again for a while before settling down behind them. Meanwhile, Justin was in no man's land but rapidly being caught by the bunch and on the last lap he was absorbed Kupiak did not contest the final sprint, being a lap up on the rest but Brodie Hay comfortably won the dash for second, with Peter Mogg in third, just a whisker ahead of a rapidly advancing John Lam and Aaron rounding out the top five. Lone woman Janna Gillick came in a very creditable eighth after having spent an active role in the main group for most of the race. Thanks as usual to our equipment manager Iain Hay and son Brodie and of course to our corner marshals, without whom there would be no race.
