OBB TT SERIES RACE #3 : RESULTS AND RECAP

A *new world record* number of racers came out tonight to make themselves hurt against the clock.  33 riders, including 11 women, took part in another perfect evening of time trialling on Nanaimo River Road.  Most importantly we had SIX people who had never raced this TT course come out tonight, keep spreading the word and getting people out to this great event.  There was good feedback on the 'pre reg' to provide a start time for everyone within a few minutes at least, so we'll try that again next week.  Also seeding it by your estimated time created a fast race with tight battles as people tried to bridge the gap on their nearest competitor. Webscorer results link here, for those who like to skim.

A great group of 11 women came out to race, with Janna Gillick posting a 23:30, just 5 seconds shy of the course record!  Lorrie Baildham came in 2nd with a sub 25, and Cheryl Morch (on a whim last minute) rode a 26:15.   Kiyomi suffered a mechanical off the start but shook it off to ride a strong 26:19 to knock almost a minute off her time from 2 weeks ago...her TT lifetime debut.  Lulu McCallum made her TT debut tonight and averaged a fast 34km/hr on her first time on the course.  Lesley Anderson continued her comeback from her accident with an awesome 33km/hr ride.  Deb, Sandy, Carole, and Colleen all improved over previous weeks, imagine the times by mid/late July?  Special mention to Tamara Zavarise who also did her TT debut and shocked the timekeeper by coming in at 30:21, before the final riders had begun the course!

Unfortunately the Gillmore kids couldn't make it tonight, they rarely miss, but the Hare duo put in outstanding rides in the youth categories.  Aiden Hare slammed home a PB in just 31:05 as he chased down Ross to the finish line, also narrowly beating his sister Abigail by just 22 seconds.

In the Mens Category, a super tight race developed, as we had former TT champ Paul Auton return to Nanaimo River Road for the first time since 2012, never having ridden this course.  Paul noticeably put the hammer down in the final stretch to finish in 21:31, a scant FIVE SECONDS ahead of Nick Kupiak.  It should be noted that this is the 3rd straight week Nick has PB'd as well.  These two averaged almost 42km/hr on a hilly course.  Justin Mark rounded out the top 3 with a 22:51, which is already fast but this is a full minute faster than his time 2 weeks ago.  Justin and Patrick have a heated rivalry going this year, with Patrick holding the edge 2-1 so far.  Patrick came in 4th with a 23:08, 25 seconds quicker than 2 weeks ago as well.  Orphee Bernard made his return to the TTs after hammering at most of them last year, although with little training in his legs this year, but still managed a 23:20, pretty close to where he closed out last year.  Another new face/blast from the past was Joel Lutz coming out to race again, last seen at the TT's in 2009, he rode a solid 24:11 on a course he had never faced as he prepares for Escape from Alcatraz.  Sean DePol dropped 40 seconds off his time,  while Jason Hare one upped him by shaving a huge 1 minute 45 seconds off his time from 2 weeks prior.  Alex Daether's Ironman training is paying off, and he also made his debut on the TT course putting in a 25:10.  Another debut rider came across from Gabriola, Timothy Maika, and rode a 34.3km/hr average with a promise to be back for more.  Lee Zavarise also showed big gains by knocking well over a minute off his time going 26:36.  Ian, Fred, Derek, Ross, Murray, and Simon all knocked time off as well.  Mike Gill put a minute into his season best, on his way to a 25 minute 15k by the end of this season without a doubt.

Many thanks to Mike McCarney for doing the turnaround marshall, and to Peter McCaffery for acting as holder and spotter for incoming finishers.  Great to see the Zavarise family out cheering again as well as a big Gabriola cheering section.  Its great to see so many people riding out to the TT as well!

Next week is a 20k TT, race start again 7pm (for the rest of the season).  Pre register now!

MIVA BOXWOOD CRITERIUM 150512

Results and report for MIVA Criterium #1, 2015051235 Kilometres

The first MIVA criterium this season was held on the popular Boxwood circuit. There were 24 starters plus 2 youth riders. As is customary when there are youth entries, the first 3 laps were neutralised and then Abigail and Aiden Hare were off on their own for 20 laps. The seniors riding 32 laps- or 35 kilometres. Nick Kupiak immediately took off and set a fast pace, with the rest about 5 seconds behind and there he stayed until the first prime, which he took comfortably, with Ray Wagner (CVCC), Justin Mark (BCBR), and MIVA's John Lam in the next three places. By now, a group of eleven had detached itself from the rest of the riders and in a further ten laps had lapped everyone else, ten of whom formed a second pack and the rest straggling off the back. Just after the midway point, Peter Mac's car horn sounded another prime and Nick took this too from Ray, with Justin in third. The lead group stayed together with the second bunch mixed up with them but a lap down. And at the third prime, with seven laps left, Nick scored his third victory, tjhis time edging Justin, Brodie Hay (Dr. Walkers) and Janna Gillick who had been in the thick of the action for most of the race. The final prime, with 3three laps left was again taken by Nick who proved to be the strong man tonight. Justin again took second and Janna beat out Brodie for third spot. The sprint for the finish was hotly contested by the lead group with a few of the lapped riders in there too just to make judging more difficult. Nick beat out Justin by under half a wheel for the win, with Shepherd Stewart (MIVA) edging Ray Wagner for third. Brodie Hay cruised in for fifth just ahead of Normon Thibault (Frontrunners and Janna rounded out the top seven, taking the womens top placing.

MIVA SPRINT SERIES - Race 1, May 8th, 2015

The first event in the NVA sprint series was a blast! Although only four competitors took part, there was also a mini contest with two kids competing and Patrick Burnham showed up to take some photos that will be up on Flickr. shortly.. Nick Kupiak came to watch and offered one of his new bottles as a prize - thanks Nick. We also had a local resident take some pictures. The event went straight to the semi-finals, with Kim Sutherland racing against Carey Mark in the first of three heats. Kim won handily, with Carey just failing to get onhis wheel in the final 200 metres. Then Justin Mark competed against Phil Birrer in the first heat of the other semi-final. This time, it was Justin comfortably beating Phil.

Before the second heats in the semi competition, it was the kids' turn. Peyton Mark and Chase Mark started their first sprint from the 200 metre mark and Chase edged his sister by a good margin.

In the second round of the semis, Kim again beat Carey but this race was much closer, with Carey drafting her opponent until fading just before the fiishfinishline. In the other semi-final, Phil started the sprint early but JasonJustin came around Mr. Birrer in the last 100 metres to take the race and move on to the finals with Kim.

Now the second of the kids' sprints took place and this time Peyton managed to outdistance her older brother so it was now one each.

In the first final ride for first and second, Justin won quite easily from Kim, giving Mr. Sutherland an incentive to provide more of a challenge to the younger rider which he did in heat two. However, although Kim managed to draft Justin and came through in the final few metres, Justin just managed to stay ahead by half a bike length to win the first event of the series, Kim taking second overall.

Everyone enjoyed the evening a lot and next week should prove to be more popular, with many more competitors.

In the contest for third and fourth, Phil was matched against Carey and managed to take two straight, giving him third place. Finally, the deciding race of the kids series proved to be a nail biter, Chase, on the bigger bike rode well, but Peyton revved at 100+ rpm to stay ahead of her brother and be declared winner of the first kids' sprint event.

RESULTS

Senior Contest:  1. JasonJustin Mark - BCBR, 2. Kim Sutherland - MIVA, 3. Phil Birrer - MIVA, 4. Carey Mark - Steed Cycles.

Youth Event: 1. Peyton Mark, 2. Chase Mark.

OBB TT Series Race #2 : Results and Recap

Another beauty evening for a TT, with a slight headwind on the way out and tailwind on the way back.  Tonight we had another huge turnout, with 24 riders out for the 20k TT.  Full results via webscorer available here. In the Youth Female category, Meghan Gillmore pushed hard tonight to edge out Abigail Hare by 1 minute.. after Abigail bested her last week by 47 seconds.   In the Youth Male category, Ian Gillmore beat Aiden Hare, averaging a faster speed over a longer distance than last week. The youth categories should have some great friendly rivalries this year!

In the Female category, Janna Gillick set a new PB and womens course record for the 20k with a smokin 31:56.  Lorrie and Kiyomi held onto the same spots as last week in 2nd and 3rd.  Deb Epps made her season debut on her slick new bike and will only get faster and faster.  Colleen Wtorek made her triumphant comeback to the TT with a solid time, as did Sandy Przada.  Carole Phee also put the pedal down and upped her average speed over last week.

In the Male category, Nick Kupiak continued his assault on his own PBs, going 2 for 2 this season after winning with a 29:36 over the 20k.  Thats an average of 40.5km/hr, on a course with huge elevation gain.  Patrick 'Steam Train' Burnham also upped his average on last week coming in 2nd with a 31:05, and Justin Mark rounded out the podium with a 31:25 averaging over 38 km/hr.  Matthys Redelinghuys put in one of his best TT's ever with a 34:01, while Simon Menno Jim and Ross all rode their first TT of the season and shook the rust off as well.  Best crowd support goes to Lee Zavarise's family who set up shop with cowbells and cheered him in, great to see!  After only 2 weeks its impressive to see everyones speeds going up already, with Mike Gill, Ian Drown, Murray Walters, and Jason Hare all moving up.

Thank you to Pure Chiropractic for supplying fresh cut oranges and banana for post race!  It was like being a kid after soccer or hockey practice again.  Also thank you to Don Gillmore for acting as the holder for the starters.

Next week we go to 15k, registration open at 630pm, race starts at 700pm.  Note this is half hour later than our first two TT's, or just show up super early thats ok too.  We are trying out pre reg for this one, you can sign on with the webscorer link here, you don't pay anything (its just like our spin class sign ups).  You can enter your name, category, cycling bc (if you dont have it, just write 'not yet'), miva yes/no, and estimated 15k time.  This will streamline our registration process and keep your wait minimal to get racing.  Humour me and try it out this week, lets see how it works.

VOLUNTEERS!  If anyone can come volunteer it would be greatly appreciated.  I think I drove about 80k tonight back and forth back and forth to set up the signs/cones and take it all down.  A turnaround marshall would be great, as well as anyone who can spot racers on their way in for me to input times quicker.  And if you're interested in timing (many survey respondents answered yes) I'd be happy to suffer for a TT while you time (don't need to know webscorer, you can do it old school)

OBB TT Series Race #1 : Results and Recap

What a great night for a bike race, and what a season opener!  23 (!) riders came out to hammer away on the 15k course, the first this season in the Oak Bay Bikes TT Series. In the Female division, Janna Gillick ripped a 24:24, 25 seconds off of her season opening 15k last year.  Lorrie Baildham came in a minute and a half later fresh off a week long cycling camp in California with cohort Kiyomi Schulz.  Kiyomi took off, but a couple K after starting flatted out.  She limped her bike back to the start, we got her tire changed (thanks for the tube Justin) and she restarted.  Didn't phase her as she finished in 27:05 for her first ever time trial.  Mary Hulti came out for her first ever TT also, not knowing what to expect, but rode a great race, as did Carole Phee who rode in 12 TTs last season alone.

In the Male Division, last years TT points champ Patrick Burnham came in 3rd with a 23:33, cutting 2.5 minutes off last years debut!  Tonight's fastest time went to Don Gillmore with a 21:48, and second place to Nicolas Kupiak with a 22:15.  In Nick's only other TT last year he rode 23:49, hard work and lots of riding pays off.  Justin Mark rode a fast 23:56, and Sean De Pol a 25:19 to round out the top 5.  From 6th to 14th the race was seperated by only a couple minutes and change, with some great efforts!  Jude Wilhelmsen's TT debut was a good one as he maxed himself out and is already looking ahead to next weeks.  Mike McCarney edged Jason Hare out by a scant 1.3 seconds in the tightest battle of the day, Jason and his bionic hand will be ready next week though.

In the Youth Female Division, Meghan Gillmore edged out Abigail Hare...while in the Youth Male Division Aiden Hare clocked a fast 32:45 (seconds off a PB in opening night!) just ahead of Ian Gillmore with 34:11.

The full results list is here via Webscorer.  Thanks again for making opening night such a success.  It was great to see so many racers stick around post race socializing (there shall be fruit next race!  Or cookies, who wants to bring cookies?).  To check your old times here are the 2014 Results, expand your name to see a full list for that season.

Nice to see many people take advantage of the seasons pass option this year for MIVA.  For just $50 you are covered for all entries for 14 TTs, 12 Crits, 5 hill climbs, and all cross clinics.  Huge value!

Many thanks to Peter McCaffery for setting up the course and being the turnaround marshall. Always a great volunteer, word is he'll be doing a few TT's this season too!

Note: next week, anyone who rides to the TT goes right after the youth starters in the start list.  A few hardy souls rode over the hills to get to the start then had to wait til their spot, apologies.  Next week is a 20k, and again registration is 600pm, race starts at 630pm.
