OBB Time Trial #5 - 40k (Pre Reg!)

This week is the seasons first 40k!  Time to raise the bar. Hit the pre reg link here and I can have everyone programmed into the start list to keep the race smooth!  I'll more or less seed it by what you estimate your finish time to be, as this puts you in place around your peers (in speed) and allows you to have a few rabbits to chase down in front, while also feeling the heat and hearing someone coming up.

I'll post the pre reg list at 430pm THURSDAY the day of the TT, right here and in our FB group.  It may adjust by a minute or two but you'll know approximately what your start time is this way, and can time your ride/drive out accordingly.  It'll also mean you don't have to show up at 630pm to register, as you've already done it!  Just show up 10 mins before your start time and be warmed up and ready.

OBB TT SERIES RACE #4 : RESULTS AND RECAP

26 riders came out on another super wicked night for bike racing.  First, for people who want to skim:

The big news of the night was that a NEW COURSE RECORD was set by Janna Gillick of the Cowichan Cycles Cartel, coming in at 31:34, averaging 38.0 km/hr over the hilly 20k, and besting her previous course record by 22 seconds.  Lorrie, Kiyomi, and Lesley all raced strong despite plenty of k in their legs recently.  And a big welcome to Lisa McLeod, MIVA's newest member (#106!), and on her first TT here, rounding out the top 5.  Sandy Przada came in at 40:43, just 15 seconds off her personal best 20k time.  Tamara Zavarise was back for more after her debut last week racing well, and Carole Phee managed her 2nd best time ever on this course with a 44:15.

The youth category was slim tonight, but Abigail Hare kept up her 'MIVAs Most Dedicated' streak and rode a steady 41:35.

The male category was another fast one, with 17 racers duking it out.  Paul Auton's debut on this 20k course was solid, riding to the 2nd fastest time EVER, with a 42.3km/hr average.  Nick Kupiak was less than ONE second off his 20k PB, but the 5/7 race may have been 100m short so he legitimately rode faster.  He also hit almost 80km/hr on the way home (I was behind him in the van, I can attest to this).  Rounding out the podium was Justin Mark who knocked a FULL minute off his best time of the year, and set a lifetime PB tonight.  Orphee Bernard also raced his lifetime best with a 31:25 to sneak into 4th spot, not bad for hardly having time on the bike this year, must be the skinsuit.  Rounding out the top 5 was Mike Sevcov, returning to the TT's and coming in at 32:06.

Patrick Burnham roared up late to the start, and headed out with zero warm up straight from work, but still managed a 32:14 (then went back to work!).  Joel Lutz was back at it again, holding an identical 37.2km/hr on the 20k route, which has one more kicker of a hill in it than the 15k it should be noted, I predict he'll break 32 at his next 20k.  Dave Steen took the ferry over from Thetis to race tonight, great dedication, and still holding the 9th fastest time on this course ever!  Alex Daether also held his same average speed with a fast 33:39.  Kim Sutherland was top 10 with a 34:09, which is almost 3 and a half minutes faster than his time last summer!  Matthys Redelinghuys came in with his 3rd best time ever, just a couple weeks after a bike crash (glad you're ok!).  Jason Hare rode his best time of the year, a scant 4 seconds behind Matt!  Simon Weber rode his 2nd fastest time ever (as predicted by the wise timekeeper at the start who knew he'd go in the 34's).  Next up for Simon is breaking 34, it will happen this season.  Mark Overton rode his PB with a 35:15, as did Ian Drown (35:30), and Lee Zavarise (35:57).

'Sounds like a Steam Engine' Award goes to Jude Wilhelmsen, who was highly entertaining as he pushed himself nearly to the point of puking, while putting in a hard earned 35:12.

Thank you to Peter McCaffery for coming out and saving me by driving the cones out to the turnaround and acting as turnaround marshall.  Peter was in good position to critique some turn techniques and will be posting on them soon.

Coming up tomorrow 5/22 are the Match Sprints on Maxey Road, 7pm. Saturday 5.23 is the Mt Washington Social Hill Climb Monday 5.25 meet at the NAC for a 20k easy paced ride. Tuesday 5.26 the MIVA Crit goes to Arbutus Meadows, 7pm start time.

Next week is 2015s first 40k TT of the year, 2 20k's back to back.  Come suffer with us, but pre register here first!  See you then.

OBB Time Trial #4 - 20k (Pre Reg!)

With record numbers proving this to be a great place to TT on a lonely stretch of Nanaimo River Road, we expect a good social group out yet again this week for the 20k.

EDIT!: Special results page here, the course records on this 20k course!  There may be duplicate names, but mostly looks good.  See how you've stacked up against your previous times!

This week I'm putting the call out to a few long time TT'ers who are due to return, Glen, Jenn, and Kaitlyn Gordon, Kelvin Stalker, Paul Callow, and Katy Wallington.  See you (and everyone else) there!

OBB TT SERIES RACE #3 : RESULTS AND RECAP

A *new world record* number of racers came out tonight to make themselves hurt against the clock.  33 riders, including 11 women, took part in another perfect evening of time trialling on Nanaimo River Road.  Most importantly we had SIX people who had never raced this TT course come out tonight, keep spreading the word and getting people out to this great event.  There was good feedback on the 'pre reg' to provide a start time for everyone within a few minutes at least, so we'll try that again next week.  Also seeding it by your estimated time created a fast race with tight battles as people tried to bridge the gap on their nearest competitor. Webscorer results link here, for those who like to skim.

A great group of 11 women came out to race, with Janna Gillick posting a 23:30, just 5 seconds shy of the course record!  Lorrie Baildham came in 2nd with a sub 25, and Cheryl Morch (on a whim last minute) rode a 26:15.   Kiyomi suffered a mechanical off the start but shook it off to ride a strong 26:19 to knock almost a minute off her time from 2 weeks ago...her TT lifetime debut.  Lulu McCallum made her TT debut tonight and averaged a fast 34km/hr on her first time on the course.  Lesley Anderson continued her comeback from her accident with an awesome 33km/hr ride.  Deb, Sandy, Carole, and Colleen all improved over previous weeks, imagine the times by mid/late July?  Special mention to Tamara Zavarise who also did her TT debut and shocked the timekeeper by coming in at 30:21, before the final riders had begun the course!

Unfortunately the Gillmore kids couldn't make it tonight, they rarely miss, but the Hare duo put in outstanding rides in the youth categories.  Aiden Hare slammed home a PB in just 31:05 as he chased down Ross to the finish line, also narrowly beating his sister Abigail by just 22 seconds.

In the Mens Category, a super tight race developed, as we had former TT champ Paul Auton return to Nanaimo River Road for the first time since 2012, never having ridden this course.  Paul noticeably put the hammer down in the final stretch to finish in 21:31, a scant FIVE SECONDS ahead of Nick Kupiak.  It should be noted that this is the 3rd straight week Nick has PB'd as well.  These two averaged almost 42km/hr on a hilly course.  Justin Mark rounded out the top 3 with a 22:51, which is already fast but this is a full minute faster than his time 2 weeks ago.  Justin and Patrick have a heated rivalry going this year, with Patrick holding the edge 2-1 so far.  Patrick came in 4th with a 23:08, 25 seconds quicker than 2 weeks ago as well.  Orphee Bernard made his return to the TTs after hammering at most of them last year, although with little training in his legs this year, but still managed a 23:20, pretty close to where he closed out last year.  Another new face/blast from the past was Joel Lutz coming out to race again, last seen at the TT's in 2009, he rode a solid 24:11 on a course he had never faced as he prepares for Escape from Alcatraz.  Sean DePol dropped 40 seconds off his time,  while Jason Hare one upped him by shaving a huge 1 minute 45 seconds off his time from 2 weeks prior.  Alex Daether's Ironman training is paying off, and he also made his debut on the TT course putting in a 25:10.  Another debut rider came across from Gabriola, Timothy Maika, and rode a 34.3km/hr average with a promise to be back for more.  Lee Zavarise also showed big gains by knocking well over a minute off his time going 26:36.  Ian, Fred, Derek, Ross, Murray, and Simon all knocked time off as well.  Mike Gill put a minute into his season best, on his way to a 25 minute 15k by the end of this season without a doubt.

Many thanks to Mike McCarney for doing the turnaround marshall, and to Peter McCaffery for acting as holder and spotter for incoming finishers.  Great to see the Zavarise family out cheering again as well as a big Gabriola cheering section.  Its great to see so many people riding out to the TT as well!

Next week is a 20k TT, race start again 7pm (for the rest of the season).  Pre register now!
