HOW WILL STAGE 14 OF TDF AFFECT GC

HOW WILL STAGE 14 OF TOUR DE FRANCE  AFFECT GC? Stage 14 of the Tour will be a great one to watch. The two tough climbs should help to shuffle the general classification. Contador likes the steeper Pyrenees ascents. In the past,Andy Schleck has also made outstanding moves on these severe gradient cols. Van den Breuk, Leipheimer, Sammy Sanchez Menchov Basso and possibly Vino may be in the mix towards the top as well as lower placed Wiggins, Evans and possibly Hesdejal. Go here for a preview of the stage.

Tomorrow will shake up the gc of course but there's also stage 17's ascents of the Galiber,  LÁlpe d'Huez and the Tourmalet to further adjust the rankings; click here for preview

RENSHAW DISQUALIFICATION IN TDF

SHOULD MARK RENSHAW HAVE BEEN DQ'D ? As a UCI commissaire with many years experience, I, along with many others, was dismayed at Mark Renshaw's disqualification in stage 11 of the TDF. I've watched numerous far more dangerous incidents that were not as harshly penalised.  Relegation and a fine would have made far more sense. The commissaire's knee jerk decision to oust Renshaw from the Tour  could have unfairly affected Cavendish's chances at winning the green points jersey. See here for another take on the sprint

OBB WHEELERS MIDWEEK ITT

OBB WHEELERS INDIVIDUAL 15KM T.T. Tonight's time trial was well attended, with 6 women and 10 men starting. It was a fine, warm, calm night - just right for a fast time and the two top women did personal bests, only 17 seconds apart. Men's winner, Don Gillmore, again did a mid-twenty minute ride, beating second place Simon Boyd by over two minutes. He assures me that, once the construction work at his home is finished,he will be looking at sub twenty minute rides. Thanks to Dave Kenny for his usual stirling job of marshaling the turn (evidently, he was attacked by a pit bull when a truck driver stopped to ask for information). Kudos to Anita Gillmore for holding the riders at the start.

Results in the usual place

NEXT WEEK'S EVENT

Next week's event is a 30km individual time trial and not the 40km event on the original schedule some of you may have. The following week is a 15km 2 person TEAM time trial. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

VOLUNTEER PROPOSAL Like many other clubs and organisations, we have an ongoing problem recruiting sufficient volunteers to ensure the safety and smooth running of our activities. Therefore the executive is presenting the following proposal for consideration by all participants in our activities.

PROPOSAL. That each of the regular participants in our midweek activities picks a specific date on which he/she will  marshal, hold, assist the timekeeper or official, do registration, etc.  All volunteers who give up their opportunity to compete on a particular day will receive 5 points towards their series totals.  Bear in mind that we need two volunteers each evening.  If there are no objections to this proposal by July 22nd., we will publish a schedule so you can choose on which evening   you will volunteer.

LA Z BOY MIDWEEK CRIETERIUM

LA Z BOY CRITERIUM # 5 REPORT Three women showed up this evening for the first ladies criterium. In order to get them used to fast pack riding in a safe environment, they started with the men and rode five neutral laps, with an abundance of advice coming from the male riders. Once the race proper started, they continued on their own but soon spread out due to inexperience. Glenda Harling, NBC, immediately pulled away from the other girls and, despite Charlene Stewart''s determined efforts to catch her, stayed away and won the 25minute race by ten seconds. New rider, Rhea Hewitson, was quickly dropped by the other two but rode steadily to finish a lap down.

In the men's event, the pack stayed pretty much together until the last lap of the 45 minute event despite NBC's Mike Sevcov making numerous abortive jumps of the front. As the group entered the final circuit, everyone was still together but on the last but one corner Paul Thompson, OBC, took a flyer from the back and stole a valuable three seconds which he kept till the line. Tony Winter, OBC, let Derek Brain lead out and then just slipped by the Everti rider to take second place with Warren Muir, OBB hird.

Thanks to Dave Kenny for helping set up the course and to all the riders who stacked the cones.
