BIKE FITTING 101

A GOOD SITE FOR BIKE FITTING After many of our OBB Midweek time trials, someone will raise the subject of bike fitting. Bikes set up by some local " experts"  often put the rider in a far-less-than-ideal position. We researched the whole subject of bike fitting and found many conflicting theories and methods for both standard road and aero positions.  One method that seems to provide  good basic road and aero positions for most riders can be found here.  I really like this particular method of sizing because it doesn't emphasise the overrated measurement of frame size or back of patella being vertically over pedal axle. These will both vary according to rider morphology.

OBB MIDWEEK 15KM ITT 10/08/05

AUGUST 5TH,  2010 15KM  INDIVIDUAL TIME TRIAL, NANAIMO RIVER ROAD This evening was made for fast times on the best 15km time trial course – very warm, very humid, and a slight easterly breeze.

Don Gillmore brought his two children out to ride a 5km in the youth category. Mom, Anita, accompanied 7 year old Meghan, while Don rode beside 5 year old Ian who was on a 20”wheel, single speed bike. Timekeeper, Peter McC had calculated that both riders would take about 17 to 18 minutes to complete the course but had to rush over top the finish line when the kids appeared almost 3 minutes earlier. Meghan did a creditable 15:30 in her first ever time trial but everyone was amazed at Ian’s 14:37. This gave him a speed of 20.5kph! Both kids sure have their parents’ genes.

In the men’s evet, Don Gillmore, ,Schwalbe got closer to 20 minutes yet again. He assures us that he will do a 19 minute ride before the end of the season. The big surprise was Michael McCann, a 63 year old visitor from the Yukon. Michael posted second with a 21:44 on his sweet new Ridley time trial bike. This will give him the lead over Dave Steen in our age on standard competition.

The women’s event saw both competitors post personal bests with OBB’s Erin Hibbitts getting closer to her 24 minute target and to course record holder Janna Gillick, HCTC.

Thanks to Anita Gillmore for marshalling the turnin place of Dave Kenny, who was stuck on Lasqueti Island.  Next week’s hill climb registration is at Departure Bay School. Event details will be posted at www.bikeracing.ca

GOOD REASON TO DO THE LA Z BOY CRITERIUMS

PACELINE AND DRAFTING SKILLS  A BIG HELP This morning I am watching the ITU World Triathlon Championship series here (scroll down to video). The women's cycling leg is currently being televised and there are large groups at the front and also chasing.  Ladies, come to the La Z Boy Boxwood criteriums and we'll teach you haw to draft and echelon  better than these world class triathletes. BTW, CCC  guru Barry Shepley used to send his athletes to the Midweek CC criteriums in Toronto to give them an advantage over other triathletes. Drafting and pacing will soon be seen at all levels of triathlon..

WHAT PETE AND DAVE DO WHEN THEY'RE NOT RUNNING MIDWEEK EVENTS

WHAT PETER AND DAVE DO FOR FUN When they are not running weekly time trials and criteriums, Peter and Dave indulge in a number of more relaxing activities. Today, for example, they went on a "Buckets and Spades"  run to Parksville, This parallels similar trips organised by St. Christopher's CCC Old Members Association in England, Of which august body they are long-time members. For an account of the trip, go here and here.
