This morning a representative from Pie in The Sky pro team was on the Duke Point Highway. He had been visiting relatives in Ladysmith and had evidently lost his way looking for the Departure Bay Ferry. He happened to pass the lead group in the Duke Point Road Race and followed them for a while. When he glanced down at his speedometer, he couldn't believe his eyes - those guys were moving faster than Floyd Landis after half a dozen beers and a rum and coke. To cut a long story short, he stopped at the line where Peter was waiting to judge the finish and, after getting the riders' names, said that he would shortly be offering them a contract to ride with his squad although he stated that he would have to find better domestiques as his present support riders would not even be able to service the MIVA riders as they were simply too fast! He said that his name was Aunley A. Rumar and that he was returning to Europe onMonday. Needless to say, we will be impatiently awaiting his email.

There was snow on the ground and a lot more on Mount Benson at 7am in the morning but by the 11am start time, it had turned
into a beautiful sunny but cool morning. The eight starters rolled
off easily and for the first few kilometres they stayed together but
on the first ascent of Jacks Hill a group of four including Doug
Merrick, Charles Hamer Ian Smith and Iain Hay upped the pace
and caused a split. Phil Birrer and Keegan Metheringham hovered
a couple of hundred metres back but Dave Steen and Kyle Waring
were already a good way back. The lead four kept up the pressure,
losing Hay to a flat just before the half way mark, and eventually
left Birrer and Metheringham trailing almost half a kilometre down
with Steen (now in his usual time trial mode) chasing steadily and
Waring, showing his state of unfitness, bringing up the rear.
In the final sprint, Ian Smith took a couple of seconds out of Charles
and Doug, who finished in that order. Keegan out sprinted Phil for
fourth and Dave managed to stay away from Kyle to take sixth.
Brodie Hay decided to ride a fifteen kilometre time trial to see how
he had improved since last Fall and beat his previous best time by
almost a minute and a half.
Everyone had good things to say about the course so, if the Duke
Point Terminal is still closed, there will be a three lap race on the
same circuit in two weeks.
We recently posted on our web site and our Facebook page a request for unwanted cycling clothing, shoes etc.for aboriginal riders. I am sending the unsold MIVA 2011 clothing plus a bunch of other jerseys, shorts, jackets etc. off to the programme on Friday next. if any of you have unwanted stuff in good condition and clean, please bring it round to my place or drop off at Oak Bay Bikes before Friday. Thanks a lot in anticipation of your generosity.
