MIVA BOXWOOD TUESDAY CRITERIUM

Not much to report on this one. Mark Wieler took the first prime but totally emptied his energy bucket doing so and was promptly dropped. For most of the race, the packed stayed more or less together. Early breaks by Sean Lunny and Shepherd Stewart came to naught. But a solo effort by Ray Wagner, who stayed away for 8 laps, taking the second prime in the process, almost worked. However, by the bell for the third prime, the pack was together again and Ian Smith edged Paul Thompson to take the flag. The fourth prime was only 2 laps later so Ian kept up the effort and took that one as well. Immediately after this last intermediate sprint, Smith and Mike Sevcov drifted off the front but were brought back within a lap. With just 2 laps to go, OBB's Sean Lunny made a last ditch attempt to go it alone and for a moment, it looked as if he might stay away from the chasing bunchWith one lap to go, Lunny was still about 8 seconds clear but at the line, Ian Smith had exploded from the pack and beat Lunny by just 3 seconds with Paul Thompson winning the bunch sprint a further 2 seconds back.

JANNA GILLICK WAVES THE MIVA FLAG

Last weekend there were three events in Victoria: the Russ Hays time trial on Dallas Rd. on the Friday, the Provincial Road Championships on the Saturday, and the Bastion Square criterium on Sunday. Janna Gillick rode all three events and had some remarkable results as she is still a catogery 3 and working on accumulating points to get her to second category. In Friday's time trial, Janna finished second,  only 8  seconds out of first place. But her best ride was in the provincial road race. She is good at 'reading' race development and was able to bridge to the race winning break. Eventually she finished sixth, not bad for a first year cat. 3 rider!

In the Bastion Square criterium, Janna was competing against a number of other riders who were much fresher than she, having opted out of the provincial championships. Her tiredness showed and eventually she was left out the back of the pack and rode on alone, albeit strongly. She was eventually pulled when she was lapped by the bunch.

Some weekend Janna, and a portent of things to come.

MIVA 20KM INDIVIDUAL TIME TRIAL, 120531

MIVA 20KM I.T.T. Nanaimo River Road

May 31st.

The turnout for tonight's 20km time trial was the best yet with 19 starters.

The evening proved to be a fast one as many people did their personal bests

for the distance. As usual, there was no traffic, apart from the few unlicensed

tor cyclists doing wheelies on trail bikes.

On a point of interest: Dave Steen, aged 70,  did a 32'50" ride tonight. Winner,

PDA, without a time bonus,  did a 28'14". For 20km itt handicapping purposes, riders are

given 8 seconds a year from 40-50, 9 seconds per year from 51 - 60, and 10

seconds per year from 60 - 70. Thus Dave's handicap would be 4'30". If we

take the 4'30" off Dave's time, he ends up with a handicap time of 18' 20", only

6 seconds behind Paul! Handicapping in time trials started nearly a hundred

years ago and was used to make up for the ravages of age.

Next week there is a forty kilometer 3 person team time trial. To ensure

that your team will ride in close formation with frequent changes of the lead,

pick your teams straight away and practise riding in a pace line. A good stretch

of quiet road for this is Maxey Road, just off East Wellington at the bottom of

the first hill. It's a straight, flat 2.5km long piece of road that finishes in a dead end.
