A smaller field on a slightly cooler evening, but some fast results put down nonetheless. It's pretty rare to see our mens 40k course record go down, and tonight was the closest anyone has come in a few years. Courtenay native Nigel Ellsay (Silber Pro Cycling) made his debut on the MIVA course and set the second best time ever with a 53:09. Curtis Dearden's (2013 Canadian TT Champion) holds the record at 52:59 from June 11, 2014. Paul Auton took second place in 58:31, and Sean Lunny (RCC) third in 1:02:21...edging out arch nemesis Joel Lutz by only 29.4 seconds.

Lorrie Baildham took the female win with a PB of 1:07:21, with Rose Houle in 2nd knocking nearly 4 minutes off her 40k time.

The scheduled event was 42laps but, since there were just 13 starters, the distance was cut to 35 laps. On lap 2, Phil Birrer (MIVA) ws at the front of the pack but he was soon absorbed and Cycle Therapy's Neil Bryant took over the lead, with the pack at his heels.On the 4th. Lap, the horn signalled the first of 4 intermediate primes and at the line, it was ATAC's feisty female, Janna Gillick, taking the flag just ahead of Nick Kupiak (Broad St. Cycles, with fast junior, Ayden Houle (MIVA) in 3rd. Then James Sage (MIVA) opened up a 5 second gap which he held for a couple of laps and then Janna and Nick came across. After one more lap, Normon Thibault (Frontrunners) made a great effort and succeeded in bridging to the dynamic duo. The quartette stayed clear of the bunch until just before the second prime, which was won by Kupiak, with Gillick in second and Thibault filling out the top 3, Sage having been swallowed up by the pack. With 18 laps to go, Normon paid for his earlier efforts and drifted back to the pack. By this time both Phil Birrer and Patrick Burnham had been lapped but Patrick hung onto the leaders and secured 2nd. Place for the next prime which was again won by Nick, with Janna in 3rd. At last, with 1 prime still remaining, Kupiak and Gillick lapped the remains of the field. Janna was content to stay with the bunch but Nick went on to grab the prime, with stragglers Burnham and Birrer taking second and third some way behind. Nick continued to take several seconds per lap for the last 4 circuits and cruised in for his solo win with Janna 51 seconds behind. The spots from 3rd. To 5th. Went to James Sage, Neil Bryant (Cycle Therapy) and Normon Thibault. Thanks to our course set up people and to our marshals, who received some compliments about their diligence from passing motorists.

The latest criterium, run as a points race, caused a bit of a shakeup near the top of the heap for the men. #broadstreetjerks rider Nick Kupiak took #allthepoints so he's still leading the standings. His training at Camp Whiskey Foxtrot has served him well. Meanwhile criterium rookie James Sage has proved that he's a quick learner with a strong kick and has moved up into second place with a single point lead over John Lam, who, according to Strava insiders, was out riding mountain bikes last night. Steady as always, Mike Sevcov remains in fourth place. However, another big move of the week saw Elijah Buffalo go from 11th place up to 5th. Also charging up the stats is Chris Cameron, who has cracked top ten after two races. Ayden Houle is holding a big lead in the Jr Men standings as he continues to his change from BMX racer to road racer, holding his own among riders with considerably more experience. As the lone female rider, Janna leads the women's category while wondering where the rest of the females are.
