LAZ BOY CRITERIUM 10/08/11
LA Z BOY BOXWOOD CRITERIUM Tonight’s Boxwood criterium had fewer riders than usual but was considerably faster due to the presence of Don Gillmore. S Soon after the 3 neutral laps, Don took off and settled down into time trial mode, taking about 10-15 seconds per lap out of the rest of the field.
After 14 laps, the bunch was caught and Gillmore rode straight past them. Only Warren Muir was able to stay close to him and sprinted out of the saddle to try and get on the speeding Schwalbe rider’s wheel. Just at that moment, Warren’s carbon fork and column seemed to part company causing Muir to lose control and crash heavily. The riders then voluntarily neutralized the race until they were sure Warren was OK and then they resumed racing.
After another 9 laps Don Gillmore lapped the field for a second time and then chose to stay with them until the last lap where he handily won the bunch sprint by 4 seconds. Full results here.
Thanks to Anita, Ian and Meghan Gillmore, Mike Woodworth, and Alex for their help
Of concern to organizers Dave and Peter was the continued low turnout to these La Z Boy events. If numbers of participants don’t increase significantly for the rest of the season, We won’t be running these criteriums next year.
