OBB WHEELERS HILL CLIMB

AUGUST 12TH,  2010  3.25km HILL CLIMB, DEPARTURE BAY RD./UPLANDS  RD. There was an excellent turnout for the first hill climb of the season. Starter Dave Steen sent thirteen competitors on their way up the Departure Bay Rd./Uplands Rd. climb. This hill is a 5%-6% gradient for the first two km; it then eases to about 4% for another three hundred meters and then kicks up to almost 13% before leveling off for the final 300 meters.

Derek Brain, who was first off, posted a time that was not beaten until the last starter, Don Gillmore, Schwalbe came into site, having passed both his minute and two minute men. He only beat the young Everti rider by 31 seconds.

The sole women competitor, Janna Gillick, HCTC did a very creditable ride, finishing 8th. overall.

Thanks to Dave Steen for starting, and to Leigh Blaney and Mike Woodworth, both of whom did an excellent job of marshalling and traffic control.

Next week’s event is back on the regular Nanaimo River Road – a thirty km individual time trial with just one turn.
