Coal City Cycles Crit 16.05.24

(by Peter)COAL CITY CYCLES BOXWOOD CRITERIUM 160524 35 laps, 40.25km 40.5kph

The scheduled event was 42laps but, since there were just 13 starters, the distance was cut to 35 laps. On lap 2, Phil Birrer (MIVA) ws at the front of the pack but he was soon absorbed and Cycle Therapy's Neil Bryant took over the lead, with the pack at his heels. On the 4th. Lap, the horn signalled the first of 4 intermediate primes and at the line, it was ATAC's feisty female, Janna Gillick, taking the flag just ahead of Nick Kupiak (Broad St. Cycles, with fast junior, Ayden Houle (MIVA) in 3rd. Then James Sage (MIVA) opened up a 5 second gap which he held for a couple of laps and then Janna and Nick came across. After one more lap, Normon Thibault (Frontrunners) made a great effort and succeeded in bridging to the dynamic duo. The quartette stayed clear of the bunch until just before the second prime, which was won by Kupiak, with Gillick in second and Thibault filling out the top 3, Sage having been swallowed up by the pack. With 18 laps to go, Normon paid for his earlier efforts and drifted back to the pack. By this time both Phil Birrer and Patrick Burnham had been lapped but Patrick hung onto the leaders and secured 2nd. Place for the next prime which was again won by Nick, with Janna in 3rd. At last, with 1 prime still remaining, Kupiak and Gillick lapped the remains of the field. Janna was content to stay with the bunch but Nick went on to grab the prime, with stragglers Burnham and Birrer taking second and third some way behind. Nick continued to take several seconds per lap for the last 4 circuits and cruised in for his solo win with Janna 51 seconds behind. The spots from 3rd. To 5th. Went to James Sage, Neil Bryant (Cycle Therapy) and Normon Thibault. Thanks to our course set up people and to our marshals, who received some compliments about their diligence from passing motorists.

MIVA Races & Disc Brakes

MIVA, With Cycling Canada's and the UCI's recent ruling on disc brakes, MIVA has been in back and forth discussion with CyclingBC to clarify how this affects our TT, Hill Climb, and Crit Series.

From June 13th onward disc brakes will not be permitted in any Time Trials, Crits, or Hill Climbs. For group rides and club rides disc brakes will not be recommended, but will be allowed.

MIVA has seen huge growth and with that comes responsibility to protect our membership, our volunteers, as well as our board of directors. Cycling BC has made it clear that we are at risk of being sued if we don't abide by the rules and that our insurance is voided in such cases. Feel free to contact Cycling BC regarding the issue at membership@cyclingbc.net

Below is the direct communication from Cycling BC to be clear to our membership:

Email #1 "As it stands, we have instituted a grace period in which we are allowing disc brakes in road events provincially until June 13th. After that, we will follow Cycling Canada's regulations, in not allowing disc brakes in competition. Our insurance policy covers all Cycling BC-sanctioned events, and our insurance brokers have assured us that there are no exclusions that would exclude events using disc brakes, if Cycling BC's regulations allow them (which they do, until June 13th).

I hope that this answers your question–let me know if you need any further clarification.

Hi Corey,

Any competitive events will need to comply with the rules and regulations surrounding competition laid out by Cycling Canada. For races, the ban will apply. For group rides and fondos, Cycling Canada has indicated that they will make an exception and allow disc brakes (though they do not recommend them), but for criteriums, road races, and time trials, they are not allowed.
Cycling Canada understands our position in allowing a grace period in which riders in the province may still use disc brakes in competition, but after the June 13th deadline, we will have to fall in line with their policy.
All the best,

Crit Corner

Crit Corner is a new series of videos being filmed in the Escape Velocity series on the Lower Mainland at their UBC and Glenlyon races this year.  A fantastic commentary over top of some exciting race footage, I’ve found each of the first three videos to be interesting and informative. In his own words –

This is a new project I'm trying out. The goals are threefold:

  1. Help you improve your crit performance through real-world examples and lessons
  2. Help me improve my crit performance through in-depth analysis
  3. Show off the sport in a unique way and hopefully build interest.

This is my first foray into the world of YouTube series, so there will be some growing pains. The eventual destination are episodes focused on specific components of a race or specific skills and techniques. I'm hoping to pump out one of these a week all summer, using footage from our weekly crits, stage races, provincial champs, and Super Week.

I'm not the best crit racer out there, but through this I hope to get a lot better and to fill a niche. I'm trying to keep it entertaining, even if you don't race.

So if you’re looking for tips and pointers, interested in what crit racing is all about or just want a mid week break from your TPS reports check it out.

Coal City Cycles Criterium Standings

After four weeks of criteriums, we've tallied the results! Given the rain (no points awarded) and the neutralized finish (two points for all starters), the series is still wide open. A few notes on the categories and scoring. Like in previous years, we split the men and the women and the adults from the U19s from the final standings and assign points as follows: 12-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-2-2. As in, all finishers outside of the top nine receive 2 points. If you feel that there are any errors in the scoring that could materially affect the year-end results, please contact us and we'd be happy to reevaluate. Presentation1
