Crit #4 Recap (May 3, 2016)

(by Peter)City Cycles Boxwood Criterium #4 160503

The threatened rain held off for tonight's 40 lap criterium and 23 starters, including 3 new cadets from Courtenay and a couple of independent seniors, lined up for the 7pm start. Perennial commisaire Peter McCaffery, aided by trainee official Julian from VIU announced that this was to be his final assignment (yeh – right!) and that following tonight's race, he would finally be retiring as a working judge and that future volunteering at MIVA's events would be on an ad hoc basis. The first few laps of the criterium went at an almost pedestrian pace – quite a change from last week's record speed of over 43kph - but the tempo soon increased as a number of breakaway attempts came from the visiting TAG youth riders and also from Nick Kupiak, Justin Mark (BRBC), James Sage (MIVA) and Daniel Wilson (Independent). Janna Gillick (ATAC) was also at the front for much of the time and actually took second in two of the intermediate sprints. The first three primes were won by Kupiak, who was clearly a cut above the other competitors and with 13 laps to go, the Broad Street Cycles rider finally managed to create a small gap of 9 seconds but he was hauled in within three laps and the bunch stayed together until the final sprint, with independent Tyler McCallen taking the 4th. Prime on the way. Nick timed his final effort beautifully and crossed the line a couple of seconds ahead of the main bunch, with nearly all the pack posting the same time and only four riders losing one or more laps. Although no-one reported abandoning the race, some riders didn't finish so any riders who quit the course, get in touch with Peter at pakamac@gmail.com So we can finalise the results. Thanks to our marshals and to those who set out the circuit in the absence of Iain Hay, who is recovering from his nasty crash last week. A QUICK REVIEW OF THE RULES AND A FEW NOTES: *Stay to the right shoulder. The RCMP will be patrolling to assist in speeders with the summer season bringing more and more vehicles out to the Lakes, and they have asked MIVA before to be courteous and stay to the right *Start line: Socializing is great but please stay to the side of the road. *Pre reg! There are at least 5, sometimes 10 posts reminding people of the TT. Its free to pre register and it has been instrumental in making the timekeepers life easier. If you find that you cant make it send miva.president@gmail.com a quick email, no problem.

RACE RULES

  • – Centre-line rule in effect. Riders must stay as far to the right as practicable. Riders caught crossing the centre-line will be disqualified. (When the RCMP came out to crack down on speeding here they noted a few of our riders not staying to the right as well)
  • – There is to be no drafting. Standard TT rules apply, riders must stay 10m behind unless overtaking another rider (5 bike lengths)
  • – Pass only on the left. Common courtesy is to notify the rider by calling out “On your left”.
  • – A pass occurs when the overtaking athlete’s front wheel passes the leading edge of the athlete being overtaken. Failure to complete a pass within 20 seconds will result in a drafting violation.
  • – Once overtaken, rider must fall back 7m before attempting to regain the lead.
  • – Be gracious to your fellow competitors. If you are overtaken, do not feel compelled to re-pass unless you are confident you can hold the lead until the finish.
  • – No blocking or impeding the forward progress of other athletes.
  • – No parking west of the start line

20k TT #2 OF ROCK CITY CYCLES TT SERIES: RECAP & RESULTS

A new MIVA record of 36 riders showed up tonight for the first 20k TT of the year in the Rock City Cycles Series. The large southern contingent of out of towners were a welcome sight as we had 11 first timers out tonight! For the skimmers, here are the results on webscorer or scroll to the bottom of this post: https://www.webscorer.com/race?raceid=67408

Series Standings

20k Course Records

Homegrown BMX standout Ayden Houle continued his assault as he shifts into road biking. Ayden rode the MIVA 100k on Saturday, his first criterium race Tuesday (and held his own), and tonight was his debut time trial. The 16 year old obliterated the youth male record for the 20k course (which stood at 37:07) by hammering a 33:49 and knocking 3 minutes 21 seconds off the record. That is an average speed of 35.5km/hr over the hilly TT course, nicely done! Not to be outdone, 11 year old Ian Gillmore blew peoples minds once again with a 35:14 time, good for second place all time. Aiden Hare also won his father's $20 bet finally and rode a very strong 43:20 barely a minute off his PB.

Abigail Hare took the youth female honours tonight with a respectable 43:50 holding 27.4km/hr.

Janna Gillick led the female category with a speedy 32:48 (36.6 avg), followed closely by Lorrie Baildham at 34:20 and Kristy Mighton at 34:23 set herself a new PB on the 20k by over a minute! Kiyomi Schulz fresh off a California hill climbing camp took fourth with Glenda Harling coming in fifth in the female group. It was great to see  a large group of FIFTEEN women out tonight to take on the TT, including first timer Joanne Brear. A big shoutout to the group from Duncan who made the drive up to try their first MIVA TT, with Glenda, Lynn, Amy, and Loraine all putting in strong first efforts on the course.  Also setting a personal best was Tamara Zavarise cutting 11 seconds off of hers and chasing down her husband Lee.

The mens race was won by last years Best All Around Rider winner Don Gillmore with a 28:19 (42.4km/hr), with Paul Auton and Nicolas Kupiak rounding out the podium. Nick once again set a PB shaving 14 seconds off, on a road bike. Look out if he ever gets on a TT bike.. Series sponsor Sean Lunny and his flashy kit rode a 30:38 into fourth with Patrick Burnham taking 5th less than a minute off his own PB.  Nice to see Stephen Price come up from Victoria for this race (32:08 in his debut), Alex Mann from Duncan on the Cycle Therapy crew, and Daryl Chase making the drive out of Port Alberni.

Thank you to Peter McCaffery (and Wendy's daughter) for manning the turn around point, and to the many volunteers who helped with holding at the start as well as finish line help.

Next week's TT goes to the 40k distance. MIVA will be taking a lap split at the half way point 20k so you'll be able to analyze your performance afterward. Youth are still able to race the 20k distance however. Pre register here please.

15k TT #1 of Rock City Cycles TT Series: Recap & Results

It was a fast night for the debut time trial of 2016, with 19 starters lining up in race 1 of 16 in the Rock City Cycles TT Series. Don Gillmore hosted an informative TT clinic that covered everything from gearing to cornering, thank you Don for sharing your knowledge and experience with the club.

MIVA moved to 30 second intervals instead of the traditional 60 seconds, which meant the timekeeper had to stay focussed and chat less. It definitely made for a tighter TT with some fast times as people had to battle to pass the person in front and avoid drafting.

Usually the first night of the TT series is a 'warm up' of sorts for many, but tonight the dedicated racers turned in some very fast times with multiple PBs as well as a NEW COURSE RECORD in the Youth Male Category.  Ian Gillmore (11 years old) hit it hard turning in a smoking 26:54 over the 15k (33.4km/hr average speed). The previous record, held by him as well, was 28:42 set on the last day of the 2015 season. Well done Ian! Aiden Hare came in with a 31:52, just 29 seconds behind his sister Abigail Hare, who rode a steady 31:23 to get her quest for another youth female crown off on the right foot.

The female category was a bit sparse with some regulars hill climbing in California, but the 3 battled hard with Lisa Mcleod taking home top honours in 28:44, and Tamara Zavarise just 12 seconds behind (and only 39 seconds off her own PB). Nancy Patterson made her long awaited TT debut in a very fast 30:47 (having never ridden the course, or this road even).

Nicolas Kupiak broke out with his personal best time to take the win in 21:20, an average of 42.2km/hr! One minute back was speedy Orphee Bernard in 22:24 also breaking his old PB of 22:50, as he preps for the Victoria Half Ironman. The TT Series welcomed back a familiar (fast) face with Sean Lunny of MIVA Sponsor Rock City Cycles coming out and setting a fast time of 22:56 in his first TT on this course, setting the bar high for the rest of the season. Patrick Burnham rode to a solid 4th place finish even with missing his start call and having to gun it from way back. Lee Zavarise also set a PB proving his hard work this winter is going to pay off. Nice to have Dave Patterson out for his debut TT as well on his way to his quest for another podium spot at Ironman Canada this summer.

Personal Bests Set Ian Gillmore Orphee Bernard Nicolas Kupiak Lee Zavarise

Thank you to Patrick Burnham for setting up the turn around, the cones, and the signs. Thank you to Darcie and Liz for manning the turnaround, and to Adam and Joanne for helping at the finish line. Also thanks to Don for acting as holder and giving tips to riders on their way out of the gates.

See everyone next week for the 20k TT.

The Peter Mcaffery Volunteer of the Year award, is a new award created by this board to recognize that this club and these events simply don't happen without the hard work of the volunteers who come out to run them.  It was named to honor Peter without whom this club simply would not exist here in the Mid island region.  For all his time and energy spent organizing and running the time trials and hill climbs and for all his countless hours behind the scenes planning and organizing, and for his constant barrage of emails and communication this board (without his approval) voted to award it Corey Friesen.

Also just in case you couldn't hear him, Phil mentioned that we have spin classes at the Swethaus, he just doesn't know where it is.
