Arrowsmith Bikes Hill Climbs Week 2 - Rounds 3 and 4 - Results

This week we had the third and forth rounds of the Arrowsmith Bikes Hill Climb Series; a shortened Norton on Tuesday and Doumont/Weigles on Thursday. The final round happens next Tuesday, with a mass start event heading up Nanaimo Lakes Road. Click here for details.

Round 3 - Norton

We almost got lucky with the weather for the third round of the hill climb series but the rain started a quarter of an hour out from the start. The riders tackled a shortened course due to a left turn across traffic that wasn’t safe without a volunteer to watch for vehicles. Despite the conditions there was still fun to be had and some strong performances.

Lorrie Baildham was the fastest woman with a time of 4:41.426, while the fastest man was Jaymi Dumper who got up the hill in 3:47.776.

Round 4 - Doumont/Weigles

Thursday saw the Arrowsmith Bikes hill climb series tackling the Doumont/Weigles climb. The course starts out fast with a little downhill but once it starts heading up, it just seems to get harder and harder.

The fastest man was who Jaymi Dumper who made it to the top in 13:06.523. The fastest woman was Janna Gillick in 14:30.094.

Thanks to Patrick for all his hard work this week.

Arrowsmith Bikes Hill Climb Round 2 - Witchcraft Results

Round two of the hill climb series saw the racers riding up to Witchcraft Lake on the lower slopes of Mount Benson. Again the weather co-operated and it was cool and dry. Eleven riders turned out to test themselves against the hill.

Janna Gillick was the fastest woman with a time of 9:11.995. James sage was the fastest man with a time of 8:38.446.

The next round of the hill climb series is on Tuesday on Norton/Tania just off Hammond Bay Road. Details here.

If you’d like to compare your time to last year, those results can be found here. (I got slower.)

Coming up this weekend:

The Comox Valley Cycle Club is hosting the Tsolum Road Race 2019. The race is split into A (70km), B (50km) and C (30km) categories. It’d be great to see a few club members up there. For more info click here.

Arrowsmith Bikes Hill Climb #1 - Oakridge - Results

Yesterday’s hill climb was great fun, the temperature was perfect, and a small and friendly group of riders turned out to test themselves against the hill. It was definitely a tough climb but everyone was still smiling (or maybe grimacing?) at the top.

The fastest man was Jaymi Dumper who made it to the top in 6:31.775 and the fastest woman was Janna Gillick who got up the hill in 7:30.258.

Thanks to Patrick for doing a great job with the timing as usual, including starting all the riders and then racing up the hill to see everyone arrive!

The next hill climb is coming up tomorrow at 7 pm. We’re racing up to Witchcraft Lake from the bottom of Jameson Road. Details Here.

Final Rock City Cycles Time Trial - 20km Point to Point

Last night saw the final Rock City Cycles time trial of 2019. A one way trip starting at the far end of Nanaimo River Road. Despite a wet start to the day, by 7 pm conditions were just right for some fast times; most riders came in a couple of minutes under their predicted times.

James Sage was the fastest man with a time of 25:40.304. This means James is the runaway winner of the Rock City Cycles time trial series for 2019, winning every single round for a total of 132 points.

Janna Gillick was again the fastest woman with a time of 29:20.818. Tamara Zavarise was the women’s series winner with a total of 103 points.

Big thanks go out to Patrick Burnham for making the TT series run so smoothly this year, for his timing expertise and for his photography which has illustrated most of these news posts. Thanks also, of course, to Rock City Cycles for their sponsorship of the time trial series again this year.

Final Aquarius Marine Criterium

The weather was perfect for the final race of the season. 16 riders came out to collect double points and secure their place in the standing.

The pace started out calm with two neutral laps and picked up sharply with Janna Gillick and Chris Cameron quickly moving to the front. No one was getting left behind however and the pack remained close for the first 7 laps. On Lap 8 Nathan Walsh jumped to the front easily taking the first prime and earning a Whitesails bomber. Two laps later Kevin Park (mistaking the bells from the spectators for a second prime) went off the front gaining a ten second lead while the rest of the pack let him dangle off the front. On Lap 13 the pack had caught up to Kevin and this time Taylor Kernovich thought he heard bells attacking off the front and putting in an impressive one minute twenty nine second lap. On lap 17 the “Official” bell was rung for the second prime and Nathan Walsh again jumped off the front, this time followed closely by Jaymi Dumper who attempted to use the momentum to go off the front and breakaway from the pack. The main bunch led by Janna Gillick quickly reeled him in again and the pace settled back down. On lap 27 I prepared to ring the bell for the next prime but an ambulance passed the course with lights and sirens. Not knowing what was happening the racers self neutralized and I held off ringing the bell to make sure all was clear. When I finally did ring the bell for the Prime, Sean Lunney in his first crit of the season put in a tremendous effort but was caught at the line by John Vanderveen. John then carried through and reminded us all why he deserved to win the National Masters Time trial earlier this month with a solo breakaway for 9 laps. After the pack caught up to him on Lap 37 the pace settled down once again as riders positioned themselves for the final sprint where Kevin Park narrowly edged out Iain Hay followed closely by James Sage. With that second place finish Iain Hay was able to secure the series overall win followed by James in second place.

Series Standings

As always thanks go out to our volunteers marshalling the corners. Without them these events simply couldn’t happen. Thanks also go out to Menno Jongsma of Aquarius Marine for sponsoring this series and the City of Nanaimo who not only allows to close the road every week but this year also printed up signs to notify road users 24/7.

Up next for riders still looking to get experience with bunch racing is the Victoria Cycling League Windsor Park Criterium on Sunday June 30. Ability based racing format with A/B/C categories. C race is at 8:30, B race at 9:15 and A race at 10:30
